The Tactacam 5.0 first hit the scene in 2018. Hunters who wanted to record the thrill of their day out in the forest, field, or plains finally had the chance to do so- a feat previously relegated only to professional sportsmen with a professional camera operator and huge budgets to do so.

Tactacam as a brand is the very first camera created for hunting enthusiasts. It features an easy to learn, simple build and has a one-touch record button. Plus, this brand is made to withstand difficult conditions and inclement weather.

The camera itself is a cinch to use and will not interfere with your day out. Just attach the Tactacam 5.0 to your firearm, scope, crossbow, or bow, or anywhere for that matter, and with that you are ready to record and share your hunt.

Indeed, the Tactacam 5.0 has what every hunter’s been dreaming of. So, let’s get started with why we chose it as our favorite camera for hunting.

Why Is This the Best Action Camera for Hunting?

Compared to its predecessor, the Tactacam 4.0, it’s much better. The Tactacam 4.0 had 5x the zoom and hunters were able to record their hunts and get close to their targets. Meanwhile, the Tactacam 5.0 has been beefed up and has better technology which leads to a far better hunting experience.

Another reason why we find this to be the best action camera for hunting is the fact that they make packages for different shooting styles. Let’s take a look at the Tactacam 5.0 packages.

5.0 Plus Package

This comes with the 5.0, FTS(Film Through Scope), an extra battery, and under scope mount, and a custom barrel mount. You can easily film through your scope and use the 8x zoom to see your target up close and personal.

Zoom Levels, Resolution, and More

When it comes to the zoom for the Tactacam 5.0, you get 8x. This gets you so close to your target that it takes your breath away. Imagine what you will see when you hit your target. It is going to be amazing, and with the Ultra HD resolution offered by the Tactacam 5.0, you will see everything.

Plus, the camera records in 4K. This lets you and your viewers enjoy an Ultra-HD rendering of your day out. If necessary, you may also record in slow-mo and in 1080p high definition.

Now onto the Facebook Live. If you are looking to stream your hunt for fun, or because you would like to develop a following, this is the way to go. It’s a seamless and easy way to get that video up and out there, and get people watching what you’re doing.

Other Upgrades

Now you have a basic understanding of why we are going nuts over this camera. At this point, we’re going to dive in deeper and go beyond the basics, into the details that make this camera the greatest of all.

Image Stabilization

The image stabilization tech is tops in this camera. It is perfect as it helps you maintain focus on your target as best you can. This is huge because imagine what happens when recoil occurs after you fire your rifle or shoot your crossbow.

Inevitably the camera shakes and the video becomes blurry when you use other hunting cameras. But the Tactacam 5.0 takes great care of this and leaves you with a clear and high-quality picture.

Remote Sync

Remote Sync is our next exciting feature. This lets you control many cameras with just a single push of a button, from up to 30 feet away. This is a very exciting feature for anybody who might be using multiple cameras while on their adventure.

It is just another way you get to become the professional you always dreamed of, or simply have an easier time creating top quality videos of your hunt!

Low Light Recording

The Tactacam 5.0 is much better than its predecessors when it comes to low light recording capability. The lens is sharp as all get out and can stand up to the first or last moments of shooting light, when the bulk of the action occurs.

Can Mount Anywhere

The bow package of this camera comes with a stabilizer mount which of course is made to replace your stabilizer. The gun mount is equipped with a bracket for mounting with several options to fit your firearm.

You Can Mount This On:

  • Your head
  • On the universal mount
  • Under scope
  • Picatinny Rail
  • Gun mount
  • Stabilizer mount

How the Tactacam 5.0 Works

best hunting action camera

Tactacam was designed to be made very easy. It is not necessary to have a degree in computer science or photography background in order to get this camera up and running. Installing the FTS system and recording top quality video is a cinch.

Of course, you will need to follow the instructions included in the user manual, plus there are helpful videos right on the Tactacam website that you can use to get your camera going.

We reviewed the Long-Range Package installation instructions to see how it worked.

It is pretty simple. You start by selecting the correct insert for your optic. Each of the systems comes with seven crescent-shaped inserts that fit onto the back of the scope and let the FTS system be tightened up in its place without harming your optic.

For us, the #4 scope was the most secure fit, but your mileage may vary. After that, the FTS system will fit in place and the camera can be moved to the left or right side of the scope.

After that it is just a matter of adjusting the focus and length of pull so your FTS system is positioned to bring you the clearest of the clear images. It stays in place thanks to two bolts that you can tighten using the included Allen wrench.

After you have charged up your camera, you can fit it right onto your bracket. At first you might find it counterproductive to place the camera lens inside of the bracket (we at first mixed up the orientation when mounting it for the first time) but it lets the view from the scope be transferred into the camera.

You may then tighten up the bolt that holds the camera steady, which secures the Tactacam to the FTS mechanism and then align it, so the mirrors send the image in the scope to the body of the camera. The FTS lens will not distort your image or create color changes, nor will it intrude on your shooting.

Recording and Storing Video

As we found, it takes just the push of a button to start recording. Your camera will vibrate which indicates you can begin recording, and it immediately starts taking images through the scope. You will want to download the Tactacam app for your smartphone.

This way you can adjust and view images and video from your Tactacam. The Tactacam and your phone will sync easily and quickly, and you can control your Tactacam from your phone, too. And if you ever need to stop recording, simply press the button and it will stop.

Pros & Cons

Now, let’s round it all up and take a look at some pros and cons to make shopping easier.

Pros:

  • 8x zoom so you can see everything about your target
  • It can record in slow motion, which is great.
  • Built to withstand shock, water, inclement weather and extreme conditions
  • Images and video are extremely clear
  • Features image stabilization

Cons:

  • Many package options to choose from so it can be hard to pick.

What Did Others Think?

Curious about what other hunters and hunting enthusiasts thought about this particular camera? Let’s take a look at some Amazon reviews. We have paraphrased these for brevity’s sake, so we encourage you to go read them for yourself.

Angela W. Says: “I have 2 of these, a 4.0 and a 5.0. I’ve had my 4.0 for 3 years and it has been through the worst conditions and back again! I have had it on many rifles, dropped it more times than I can count, and it even sat in the wet snow for two days after it fell out of my pocket. It still works like brand new.

Meanwhile, the 5.0 has a better zoom. Both of these cameras are very easy to use. They are easy to sync. You do not have to set your camera up and pray that it is pointing in the same direction as your weapon.

The only gripe I have about this particular camera is that the mic picks up every single sound, even the smallest ones, and the video amplifies the sound. It sounds like I am rubbing my gun against something, but in reality, it is just my hands adjusting the firearm as I zoom in on my target.

[It is worth noting that the author of this review posted a video with her testimony and was able to showcase the Tactacam’s great ability to pick up sounds, including that of the buck she had shot].

Lastly make sure you have a spare battery as a backup, the batteries last a good long time, but it is always better to have a spare one.”

Amazon Customer writes: “The battery lasts over two hours, non-stop, on quality 1080p with 120 frames per second as well as 4K at 30 frames per second. It has amazing mounting options for a variety of weapons and is very lightweight. The 8x zoom and this amazing camera quality make this much better than GoPro for outdoor use and hunting trips.

Reviews on this product are generally quite favorable. We encourage you to go read these for yourself and check out what other writers had to say about the camera. You will find that it is truly worth every penny when it comes to capturing your most unforgettable moments of hunting.”

Conclusion

The best action camera for hunting is, without a doubt, the Tactacam 5.0. It’s got everything you could ever want when it comes to capturing footage of your hunts. The best feature by far has got to be the image stabilization.

Everybody knows that firearms especially have some pretty harsh recoil and that can really mess with your camera shots. But with this, you are going to experience the most beautiful and clear photos and videos.

You will enjoy showing off the footage and stills to your friends, family, and fellow hunters because it is so high quality and a joy to look at. Enjoy the hunt and the memories you make!
